Absentee Voting

Frequently Asked Questions

4. Will my vote count if I vote absentee?

a. Yes. (If you do it correctly.)

It’s true that absentee ballots are more likely to be rejected than in-person ballots. The single most common reasons votes are thrown out? The signature line, and missed deadlines.

Ballots may be rejected if the document is unsigned entirely, or the signature on the ballot is determined not to match the signature on file. The second reason? The ballot arrived too late. That’s why it’s more important than ever to vote early and ensure your ballot is counted.

You can track the status of your absentee ballot on the Secretary of State’s website.

If there’s an issue with the validity of your absentee ballot, election officials will attempt to reach out to you in writing to resolve the issue. The earlier you get your ballot in before election day, the more likely it is that you will have time to account for any mistakes or questions about your ballot.
