US Census Data on Disabilities

The Great Lakes ADA Center has compiled statistical information from the Census Bureau on the prevelance of disability in the United States. These snippets can be handy for use in reports, grant requests, media contacts and other projects. 

Population Distribution

41.2 million - Number of people who have some level of disability. They represent 15 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population 5 and older.

By Age

6 percent of children 5 to 15 have disabilities.

US Army Adopts Early Intervention Model from Tennessee

Robin McWilliam, Ph.D., will help the Army implement his model for early intervention in natural environments for children with special needs.

Dr. Mark Ylvisaker Passes Away...

His book Collaborative Brain Injury InterventionAfter an early career teaching philosophy at Carleton College and the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Ylvisaker became a speech-language pathologist. Currently, he is Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York.

Governor, General Assembly Set to Eliminate the Family Support Program

Family Support LogoIn 1992 the Coalition led efforts to establish the Family Support Program, but today the program and its roughly $7.6 million budget are set to be eliminated in the 2010-2011 fiscal year.  However, 5 to 15 minutes of your time can help save this program for years to come.  Imagine that, $7.6 million dollars saved for just a few minutes of your time.

University Training Opportunity for Parents of Children with Special Health Care Needs and Disabilities

Are you the parent of a child with disabilities who is seeking leadership training  and knowledge?  There is a parent trainee position available at Vanderbilt University through The Mid-Tennessee Interdisciplinary Instruction in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (MIND) Program. The MIND Program prepares graduate level health professionals in 14 disciplines to assume leadership roles to serve children with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities.
