In July 2000, the Tennessee Disability Coalition and the TBI Program of the Tennessee Department of Health established a partnership with the shared goal of improving educational outcomes for students in Tennessee with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). With funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau and Tennessee's TBI program, Project BRAIN was developed to address the issues around identifying and supporting these students in school.
Working to improve educational outcomes for Tennessee children & adolescents with brain injuries.
The Brain Resource and Information Network was established to provide brain injury awareness training and to develop multidisciplinary TBI resource / support teams for Tennessee school systems.
With appropriate supports at home and in school, children and adolescents with brain injuries can and do make considerable progress as students. By providing the training and information to those who support students with TBI, Project BRAIN seeks to increase students’ chances for educational success.
“I know that brain injury
is still referred to as a ‘low incidence disability’
in schools. In turn, teachers have typically had less access to
resources and training on this disability. By providing information
on how brain injury can impact a student, we not only improve chances
for correct identification of these students, we also increase the
likelihood that they will have a successful school experience.”

Project BRAIN is supported in part by project H21MC06739 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Additional support is from the Tennessee Department of Education, Division of Special Education. The contents of the publication are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the DHHS. Project BRAIN is a project of the Tennessee Disability Coalition, implemented through a contract with the Tennessee Traumatic Brain Injury Program of the Department of Health.
Project BRAIN addresses the dilemma of how to identify and support students with TBI from hospital to home to school by:
- Increasing awareness of children and youth with TBI who are served by the school system
- Providing training and technical assistance to schools, families, and healthcare providers in the early identification of children with TBI
- Supporting BRAIN Resource Teams within selected school systems that will consult locally on issues of developing supports for Tennessee students with TBI
- Partnering with Tennessee hospitals to promote effective communication between healthcare providers and educators to facilitate successful transitions
