Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of brain injury across all ages. Other common causes among children and adolescents include falls, violence, and sports-related accidents.

This pie chart illustrates the causes of injury as recorded in Tennessee's TBI Registry. The TBI Registry tracks the number of people admitted to Tennessee hospitals for treatment of a brain injury. Since 1996, over 7,000 persons, ages 3 to 21 have been reported to the registry by hospitals statewide.
