In July 2000, the Tennessee Disability Coalition
and the TBI Program of the Tennessee Health Department established
a partnership with the shared goal of improving educational outcomes
for students in Tennessee with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). With
funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration's
Maternal and Child Health Bureau and Tennessee's TBI program, Project
BRAIN was developed to address the issues around identifying and
supporting these students in school.
Working to improve educational outcomes for Tennessee
children & adolescents with brain injuries.
The Brain Resource and Information Network was established to provide
brain injury awareness training and to develop multidisciplinary
TBI resource / support teams for Tennessee school systems.
With appropriate supports at home and in school, children and adolescents
with brain injuries can and do make considerable progress as students.
By providing the training and information to those who support students
with TBI, Project BRAIN seeks to increase students’ chances
for educational success.
“I know that brain injury
is still referred to as a ‘low incidence disability’
in schools. In turn, teachers have typically had less access to
resources and training on this disability. By providing information
on how brain injury can impact a student, we not only improve chances
for correct identification of these students, we also increase the
likelihood that they will have a successful school experience.”

Funding
In 2004, Project BRAIN is delighted to announce that program funding
will be through a new partnership with the Tennessee Traumatic
Brain Injury Program and the Department of Education, Division of
Special Education. Our contract administration will continue
with The Tennessee Disability Coalition. This new
unity will allow the Project to maintain supports and strengthen
our commitment to Tennessee students. Also this year, Project B.R.A.I.N
will be working with designated hospitals statewide to promote clear
communication links between hospitals schools, Brain Resource Teams
and TBI Program Service Coordinators.
