The Tennessee Disability strives to
build a better world for people with disabilities - today. Our public
policy and systems change agendas support that goal. The Coalition
has also developed other projects that support that vision and mission.
Advocacy
The Coalition provides individual advocacy services to individuals
with mental retardation who are living or formerly lived in one
of the state's Developmental Centers. Advocates work to protect
individuals' rights.
James Willis spent more than 40 years of his life in a state institution,
not for any crime he committed, but because of his disability. James
enjoyed living in his own home and having choices and control
of his life, thanks to systems change leadership of the Coalition
in promoting home and community-based services in place of institutional
care. James was one of nearly 700 Tennesseans with mental retardation – all former residents at developmental centers – for
whom the Coalition now provides personalized advocacy services.

All children need opportunities to grow and learn and develop skills
that lead to meaningful lives. The Coalition works for a world in
which children with and without disabilities can grow and learn
together by having access to quality health care, education, and
supportive environments.
Family Voices of Tennessee
As an outgrowth of our healthcare advocacy, the Coalition began
organizing families of children with special health care needs for
mutual support and to give voice to the need for coherent health
care policies that are family-centered.
Family Voices of Tennessee is operated by and for families in our
state.

The Tennessee ADA Network
The Americans with Disabilities Act offers civil rights protection,
freedom, and full citizenship to people with disabilities. Shortly
after the passage of the ADA, the Coalition established a network
of disability groups that continue to work in their communities
to promote compliance and effective implementation of the ADA. The
network supports people with disabilities to help others achieve
the American dream.
As an adult, Floyd Stewart sustained a spinal cord injury resulting
in quadriplegia. The absence of supports for himself, his wife and
children gave him no choice but to live in a nursing home for several
years. Through determination and completion of his college degree,
Floyd found the help he needed to regain his independence in his
own home with a full time job helping others with disabilities.
These days Floyd is passionate about removing barriers to independence
and the ADA is an important tool to barrier removal.
